Ten Things You Should Know About Memorial Day

Ten Things You Should Know About Memorial Day

Courtesy of www.usmemorialday.org and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

How did Memorial Day get started, and why is it on May 30? Here are some facts about the national day of remembrance for America’s fallen heroes.

1.Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day.

2.More than two dozen cities lay claim to being the site of the first Memorial Day commemoration.

3.Gen. John Logan officially proclaimed Memorial Day on May 5, 1868.

4.The first national commemoration took place on May 30, 1868, as flowers were placed on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

5.In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon B. Johnson declared Waterloo, NY, as the “birthplace” of Memorial Day, citing a ceremony held on May 5, 1866 to honor Civil War dead.

6.It is believed that the date was chosen because by May 30, flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

7.Inspired by the poem “In Flanders Field” Moina Michael wrote a poem of her own, and came up with the idea of wearing red poppies in honor of Memorial Day.

8.Some Southern states have special observances specifically in honor of fallen Confederate soldiers, including Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

9.In 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act to encourage people to give back to the country, as well as promote commemorations of Memorial Day.

10.The National Moment of Remembrance Act urges all Americans to pause, wherever they may be, at 3 p.m. local time on May 30 for a moment of silence in honor of the country’s fallen heroes.

Diploma Day!

Today was an amazing day!  Chandler got his diploma from 4K.  We could not have asked for a better year!  We had an amazing teacher who cared for Chandler and kept up updated weekly on his progress.  Chandler did very well in 4K this year and mommy and daddy are very proud of him for his accomplishments.
Perfect Attendance All Year

Reading on a scale of an 8 on DRA.
All year long, when his teacher would say Chandler is reading very well and is on level #, I would say, "is that good?"  Level 8 means that Chandler is reading around the middle of first grade!  Check out the chart if you would like to more about DRA levels on your child.  Also, gives a great comparision for Scholastic Books!

Seems to be more outgoing around his friends!

Enjoy the pictures!

Such a cute picture!

Participating in the little program!

Last game

Tonight was the last ball game for the year!
I have to admit that it will be nice to have our Friday night's back but will miss seeing the little one play.

Will it come to me.....did not get a ball all night.

Hey look, I am ready.....nope, still no one through the ball to me.

Batter up....BAD news, I got my first strike out...
Guess I just needed to wait until the last game!

Coming home...

Gotta love it!

We cannot wait until next year to watch you grow into an excellent ball player!
We love you!

Cayleigh enjoying watermelon for the first time!
EK was napping during this time!

She is up.....time for a snack!

They both love this toy.....of course it only happens when one is on it!
Cayleigh had to have a little talking to because she wanted to push EK off and get on!
Look at that leg, she is ready to get on!

heehee, you got in trouble, EK is thinking....Can always tell when Cayleigh is nervous...she puts her hands in her mouth.

Now it is time for Cayleigh to get on toy!  They went back and forth!  It was too cute!

Oh well, guess we better move on to some other toys!

We had a great day at Gma and Gpa's.  It was even better that EK was there for us to play with and get plenty of kisses!

Teacher Appreciation Week

It's Teacher Appreciation Week!
I cannot take credit for these simple to make M&M treats...

Go over to....
Chandler helping by putting the M&M's in the Mason Jar! (pint size)

Time for my part...

Cut out some circles to give the lids some color!
If you have the Creative Memories Scrapbook set, use the red cutter with the small circle.

I wanted to give the circles some color so I added these flower stickers to the top.

Think they turned out pretty good!

Glue circle to Mason Lid

I glued the saying onto a piece of scapbook paper to make it thicker.
Put a hole in the corner and a piece of rope that I had.....and.....

Our Teacher Appreciation Gift is Finished....

Here is the saying in case you would like to make these simple and inexpensive gift.
Just Copy and Paste and Create!

Green is for the inspiration you give me each day.
Blue is for your patience in showing me the way.
Orange is for your warmth and caring style.
Yellow is for the way you always make me smile.
Red is for my life that you have touched this year.
You're a very special teacher just like this jar, that's clear.
You place knowledge in our children's hands
and melt into their hearts and lives forever.
You're a "Magnificent" & "Marvelous" teacher

Thank
you for being my M&M.

Our Little Star!

After all the afternoons of practicing baseball in the yard, it finally paid off tonight!
Chandler wants to have a ball in his hand every minute!

He has even started watching Major League Baseball.
The Braves and The Yankees are his favorite...

Cayleigh doing what she does best at Chandler's games....
other than running around!

Batter Up!

He wants to steal so bad.....

Get Down!

Good Slide!

First pop fly at a game.  Will I get it or miss it!

I got it!

That was the best look on his face when he realized he caught the ball!

He loves to slide and loves baseball!
